Kenya: Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo has directed all major roadblocks along theNorthern corridor be removed until further notice.
Kimaiyo was speaking Sunday during a press conference following a directive from the President to initiate investigations in the Traffic Police Department and deal decisively with errant officers.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s order came following recent threats by Matatu Welfare Association to withdraw vehicles from roads if police continue harassing their members and soliciting bribes.
Uhuru was speaking during an Annual Inspection Parade of St John Ambulance in Nairobi Sunday. He also directed Kimaiyo to act on errant traffic officers who are soliciting for bribes from motorists.
Uhuru said Kimaiyo should investigate cases brought before him and take disciplinary action on officers who subvert the law.
“For this country to transform, we need a mental shift of doing things in the right manner,” he stated.
He lamented that the number of road accidents has been on the increase yet there are officers on the roads.
