NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 14 – A two-year-old girl and a driver were kidnapped on Thursday afternoon in Nairobi’s Parklands suburb.
Police said the kidnapping occurred when the driver went to pick up the girl from a school within Parklands.
“Reports indicate that the driver picked up the girl from school but he did not return home, and calls to his phone went unanswered,” a police officer aware of incident said.
On Friday morning, the family of the little girl received a telephone call with a demand for ransom.
“The family has already been contacted by people asking for a ransom of Sh50,000 to enable the release the little girl,” another police officer said.
Police said they recovered the family vehicle in Kariobangi and were concentrating their search efforts in the area, following reports the kidnappers and their captors could be in the vicinity.
Detectives are working closely with mobile phone operators to help locate the kidnappers and rescue the two.
Statistics released by Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo show that cases of kidnappings which were on a decline, are now on the rise.
