The police on a go-slow to press for a salary increase and payment of arrears are unhappy with colleagues assigned to VIP guard duty for refusing to join in. The rank and file of police not on VIP security detail feel one way they can exert pressure and have their grievances addressed urgently is for those on VIP duty to withdraw their services "so that the VIPs can feel the impact".

A group of lawyers were overhead complaining that the recent appointment of 15 judges to the Court of Appeal did not reflect regional balance. They pointed out that the appointments, which are due to receive presidential assent, do not have anyone from the North Rift yet there are three appointees from the community of one of the Judicial Service Commission members.

The Law Society of Kenya members spotting the yellow ribbon to protest the bench's interference in the ongoing vetting of judges and magistrates got a rude shock yesterday when a senior counsel dismissed the protest as "childish". The protesting lawyers should know one of those already found unfit to continue serving as judges is a relative of the senior counsel.

Some ODM aspirants in Kisumu County are plotting to lock "outsiders" out of electoral office. The target is anyone born outside Kisumu. Some of the aspirants born in the neighbouring Siaya have, as individuals, expressed an interest in Kisumu seats. The plotters may not realise they are trying to violate the constitution which gives every Kenyan the right to run for office anywhere in the country, irrespective of gender, place of birth or any consideration except the limitations within the law.
