Youths miss out on career in the Army because of IDs

Tuesday, the 31st of July 2012 - It was a sad site to behold yesterday as several youths in Kwale missed out on a chance to join the army due to some inconsistencies in their national identity documents.

Lt-Col Paul Njema, who supervised the army recruitment exercise in Kwale, said that the young men could did not make the cut because there were some inconsistencies between the information in their national IDs cards and that in their birth certificates;

“This has forced us to send them back since they do not correspond with our requirements,” he said.

The recruitment drive that has started at the Coast is meant to boost the Kenya Defence Forces by about 2000 officers in the different cadres of the army.

The recruitment exercise goes to other parts of Kwale, Lamu, Wundanyi and Mwatate on Tuesday.

Lt-Col Njema said what happened in Kwale can be avoided in future;

“To avoid such misunderstanding in future, I am asking parents and everybody to ensure the initials in their certificates match since some have been disqualified because of difference of names,” said Lt-Col Njema.
