PRESIDENT to be sworn in 14 days after results – WHO WILL IT BE?

Friday August 10, 2012 - The next Head of State will be sworn in 14 days after being declared a winner, a new Bill states.

According to the Assumption of Office of the President Bill, the new president will also be sworn in at a public ceremony not in State House as witnessed in 2008.

Acting Internal Security Minister Yusuf Haji who is the mover of the Bill, said the new law would provide a clear frame work for handing over power from one president to another.

“The new law will have clear time lines on the swearing in ceremony,” Haji said
Haji said the new law would also see the formation of the assumption of office of the President committee.

The committee will comprise of the Attorney General, Chief of the Kenya Defence forces, and Inspector General of the National Police Service and the Clerk of the Senate.

Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Eugene Wamalwa hailed the Bill saying 14 days is a good time for those who feel aggrieved with the elections outcome to go to court instead of calling for “mass action”.

“This will send a message that Kenya has become of age and that democratic elections have to be respected. There will be no bloodshed. Go to court if you are not satisfied with election results,” Wamalwa said.
