Management row affects St Mary’s Hospital

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 1 – Operations at the Catholic-run St Mary’s Mission Hospital in Nairobi’s Langata were paralysed on Wednesday morning following a management row.
According to hospital spokesman Dr Jospeh Karanu, the staff who demonstrated on Wednesday morning wanted the ownership row to be resolved and two directors who had been arrested on Tuesday released.
“We held peaceful demonstrations this morning within the hospital. Two of our staff members have been put in, and facts are not coming out as they should. They were put in on allegations of contempt of court whereas they have not interfered with a court injunction,” Karanu asserted.
He said three nurses who had been sacked moved to court and filed a case claiming that the director of the hospital is Catholic nun, Maria Felix. They also asked the court to block two directors, Walter Konya and Rucha Marangu against interfering with their reinstatement.
The directors were arrested on Tuesday.
Karanu claimed that the hospital was founded by a man by the name of Bill Fryda but the ownership scuffle emerged after Assumption Sisters moved to court alleging that the director of the hospital is Catholic nun, Maria Felix.
The striking workers called on Cardinal John Njue to intervene and make a decision on who should manage the hospital.
Operations at the hospital resumed after the morning demonstration. Karanu said their demonstrations on Thursday will also not interfere with the hospital operations.
“What we ensured today is that all emergency cases were handled. After the demonstrations the workers went back to work, and even tomorrow if we go for the demonstrations we will ensure the same. We will ensure all emergencies are handled and let the rest of the staff participate in the demonstrations,” he said.
