It seems the austerity measures which the government has introduced mean zilch to a handful of government officials who are in London for the Olympics. These officials are accompanied by their girlfriends and wives who travelled and are staying in London at the taxpayers' cost. Taxpayers have paid at least Sh4.3 million for the first class tickets (each is Sh240,000) of nine officials — all from one ministry — who are accompanied by their wives/girlfriends and who attended the official opening ceremony last Friday. They have booked themselves into expensive hotels on full board.

Brand Kenya Board should consider hiring Eldoret North MP William Ruto as its chief ambassador. Apart from sporting his trademark cap bearing the colours of the Kenyan flag, the 2013 presidential hopeful has now directed that all URP meetings he attends should be opened by singing the national anthem. On Monday night during the launch of the book Unyielding Hope: The Life and Times of Koitalel Arap Samoei, Ruto asked guests to stand up and join him in singing the national anthem "to show your pride in being Kenyans and Africans". Koitalel was an Orkoiyot or supreme chief who led the Nandi rebellion against British colonial rule in the 1800s.

A presidential aspirant from Western Kenya — who has been denounced by one of his key benefactors as being "unable to stand firm on his convictions" — was recently spotted at Dagoretti Market in Nairobi with PM Raila Odinga’s sister at her Villa Hotel. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but soon afterwards the man was on a tour of South Nyanza conducting a rally!
