Koffi Annan’s MESSAGE to Kenyan POLITICIANS

Koffi Annan’s MESSAGE to Kenyan POLITICIANS

Monday 27th August 2012 - The former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has called for strong laws central to enable the implementation of the new constitution.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Annan said that there are concerns about the extent to which some laws were being enacted stating that some did not adhere to the letter and spirit of the law.

Parliamentarians passed a watered down version of the leadership and integrity bill 2012 after deleting a requirement that would have subjected political aspirants through a vetting procedure.

A new constitutional order was one of the prescriptions for a peaceful election as resolved by Dr Annan-led African Union Panel of Eminent African Personalities that negotiated peace during the 2007/08 post election violence.

“The comprehensive implementation of the Constitution is the road map to which the people of Kenya overwhelmingly hope to see the national values and principles of government upheld to include integrity, transparency and accountability,’’ he said.

Annan also called for the members of the public to vote in leaders of integrity. If the integrity bill is passed as it is now, the IEBC would not have powers to disqualify corrupt and questionable aspirants.

He also called for a speedy creation of the National police service.
