DRAMA at University of Nairobi this morning

DRAMA at University of Nairobi this morning

Thursday 2nd august 2012 - Drama unfolded at The University of Nairobi’s Mamlaka B in the early hours of the morning when a young man attempted to jump from a four storey building.

The young man called Collins Kiprotich climbed on top of the building at 6am citing fear of his life claiming that his uncle and other members of the family were plotting to eliminate him. For the better part of the morning, the university was at a standstill as lecturers, neighbors, the University security together with Hatari Security guards responsible for manning the estate tried to persuade Kiprotich to come down. Kiprotich also said he sees and hears voices of dead people coming to take his life.

According to his uncle, a worker at the University and who only preferred to be called as Moses, Kiprotich is delusional.

“He has been daydreaming that people want to kill him. He sees what other people can’t see and claims that he is being followed. Last week we took him to church for prayers,’’ he said.

Right from the roof top of the apartments, Kiprotich however said that his uncle, who he had come to visit, had been accusing him of raping his sister and had colluded with other unknown people to take his life.

When the University of Nairobi students’ counselor, Mrs. Susan Thuo came to intervene, Kiprotich said he would only climb down on one condition - that his sister whom he is accused to have raped brought to confirm the allegations.

After hours of fruitless persuasions,  a group of angry youthful neighbors who became restless, climbed up and grabbed Kiprotich and took him down before giving him a beating. The University of Nairobi Student Welfare Association Head of Security Mr. Phanel Ambuya who was also present said it was unfortunate for a young man to try to take his life but hailed the actions of the neighbors who saved him.

Mrs. Thuo said that Kiprotich’s condition is a case of depression. He added that they are taking him to the University Hospital where he will see a psychiatrist.
