The Orange party looked set for new alliances at the Coast on Sunday after its leader appeared at a high-profile wedding.
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga was at a well attended wedding ceremony for Mombasa County senator candidate Hassan Omar Sarai in Mombasa.
Mr Odinga’s presence at the wedding stunned some, but what was so conspicuous was the presence of the who-is-who in the business world in Mombasa.
Mr Odinga also showered praises on Mr Sarai whom he described as a true fighter for human rights since his days as a university students leader.
Welcome to club
“I want to welcome you to the club of married men. I know you want to marry another wife (senator position) but that one, let the voters decide,” he said.
Mr Odinga attacked those leaving the party saying there should be no big issue over the matter as others will be with him.
“Let those who want to leave go. They are free to do so as ODM is not a jail to confine people. Those who voters will bring to me I will work with. ODM will go on until the end,” he said.
Without mentioning names, Mr Odinga said ODM would not be intimidated by those leaving as “ODM is not one person’s property”.
He made the remarks at the Mombasa Sports Club, where the wedding took place.
“Those who wish to go may do so. Even a donkey, after carrying a load for too long, says it is tired and lets go of the cargo. The donkey is now tired,” he said.
He condemned Gema and Kamatusa, saying Kenyans had fought tribalism for far too long are fed up with such groupings.
