Prime Minister Raila Odinga has expressed optimism that he would be elected president in the next General Election.
Mr Odinga said the country will never experience
what happened during the 2007 bungled elections saying that a credible
electoral body has been put in place.
“This time I am going to score. It is not going to
be an offside like it was in the last General Election where somebody
messed up with the process,” said Mr Odinga.
Addressing mourners at Borangi SDA Primary School
during the burial ceremony of the former Central Bank of Kenya deputy
governor Hezron Nyangito Friday, the PM called for peace in the country
ahead of the polls.
He said that no meaningful development can be achieved in the country if there is no peace and unity.
"I call upon all Kenyans to pray for peace in the country as we approach the next elections."
The PM called public servants to emulate Dr
Nyangito’s footsteps whom he termed as a charismatic and development
conscious person.
He said Dr Nyangito’s track record was indisputable and that he served Kenyans diligently.
President Kibaki said that Dr Nyangito had left a vacuum in the economic sector which would be difficult to fill.
During his tenure in the civil service Dr Nyangito
had initiated various projects that were for the benefit of the people,
the President said in a speech read by Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta.
Several PS’s led by information PS Bitange Ndemo praised Dr Nyangito saying that he was a role model.
Eldoret North MP William Ruto said Dr Nyangito was a
true statesman who believed in service delivery. Mr Ruto said he left
behind a strong legacy.
Mr Ruto supported Mr Odinga’s calls for peace
vowing that never again shall people die, displaced or lose property
because of political contests.
He said the Kisii and Kalenjin communities are committed to bridging peace.
"We must forgive each other for the wrongs that might have happed during the post election violence,” said Mr Ruto.
Others present were: Education minister Prof Sam Ongeri, Public
Works minister Chris Obure CBK governor Prof Njuguna Ndungu, Commission
for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) chairman Charles
Nyachae, Lands minister James Orengo former cabinet minister Simon
Nyachae and several MPs.
Mr Nyachae, who addressed the mourners steered clear of politics and instead consoled the family.
Dr Nyangito leaves behind a widow, Mrs Mary Omare, and two children.
