Lawyer Gladys Shollei was on Monday sworn in by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga as the chief registrar of the judiciary.
The CJ later named 28 new High Court judges. (READ: Kenya gets 28 new high court judges)
The chief registrar, a new position created by Kenya's one-year-old Constitution, will oversee all administrative issues in the judiciary.
The CJ said that the Mrs Shollei was picked in a competitive and transparent process.
In the three-minute ceremony at the Anniversary Towers, an excited Mrs Shollei swore to serve all Kenyan with dignity regardless of their religious and political backgrounds. Also at the ceremony were her husband Sam Shollei, and other members of her family. Mr Shollei is the managing director of Tanzania's Mwananchi Communications, a subsidiary of the Nation Media Group.
Mrs Shollei beat among others the registrar of the High Court, Mrs Lydia Achode and Mr George Kegoro of the Kenyan chapter of the International Commission of Jurists to the key post.
Judges
During the ceremony, Dr Mutunga announced that the commission would release the list of 26 nominees for appointment as High Court judges.
Notably, Mrs Shollei had also applied for a position of the High Court judge and unsuccessfully as Deputy Chief Justice.
Before her appointment, she was the deputy chief electoral officer at Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC).
Prior to IIEC, she was the editor and chief executive officer of the National Council for Law Reporting.
Born in 1969, the new chief registrar holds a master of laws degree from the University of Cape Town and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi.
She also holds a master of business administration degree and is doctoral candidate at the University of Ghent in Belgium.
