Raila remains the candidate to beat in 2012 elections

BY ALLY JAMAH
A new opinion poll shows that Prime Minister Raila Odinga is still the most popular presidential hopeful but would lose the election in a runoff with a G7 Alliance candidate.
A poll by Smart Octopus late last month, which polled 2,000 Kenyans, showed that if the PM were in a runoff with Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka, today he would lose.
He would also lose a runoff to Deputy PM and Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto if the G7 Alliance holds together.
"About 64 per cent of respondents said they would vote for Kalonzo against 28 per cent who would vote for Raila while eight per cent were not sure of whom they would support," said Managing Directorof Smart Octopus Samuel Thiari yesterday in a press conference at Laico Regency, Nairobi.

This is despite the fact that the PM is leading with 26 per cent followed by Uhuru (23 per cent), Kalonzo (19 per cent), Ruto (16 per cent), Eugene Wamalwa (six per cent), Ben Mulwa (four per cent), Martha Karua (three per cent) and Peter Kenneth (one per cent). The firm’s officials were quick to defend themselves against accusations of being financed by personalities with a vested interest to skew the poll numbers.
