Kenya’s ambassadors on Monday donated Sh1.2 million towards buying food for Kenyans faced with starvation.
The envoys who are in South Coast for a two-week strategy conference handed their cheque to President Kibaki when he opened the meeting.
Prof Saitoti said a number of foreign governments had pledged to donate food, medicine and other non-food materials.
The minister said South Korea had given some US$ 1.5 million (Sh136.5 million) to World Food Programme for delivery of relief supplies to Kenyans.
The Russian government had given US$1 million (Sh91 million) plus 1,000 tins of wheat flour.
Similar support has been received from the Qatari government, which has chipped in with food, medicine and 250 tents.
President Kibaki said the government would do all it can to ensure no Kenyan died of hunger.
He urged Kenyans to donate towards helping their brothers and sisters in famine-stricken areas and the Horn of Africa.
Earlier, Foreign assistant minister Richard Onyonka said eight Kenyans were rescued in Lebanon where they had gone to work only to be ‘chained and detained’ for prostitution.
