NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 22 – An Akorino worshiper who had been jailed for eight months for refusing to take her child to hospital walked out of the Nyahururu GK prison on Monday, on completion of her sentence.
Susan Cherono Langat, 54, was welcomed by hundreds of faithful from the Akorino sect who had converged at the prison’s main gate eagerly waiting for her release.
The mother of nine thanked her fellow faithful for their prayers, saying they helped her withstand her sentence at the prison.
“I prayed a lot while in prison. I Prayed for you all and my family asking God to protect you from harm,” she told the jubilant crowd of relatives and friends who had gathered outside the prison gate.
She added that the sentence would not shake her religious conviction and vowed to remain steadfast in her faith.
Ms Cherono who hails from Subukia in Nakuru County was jailed by a Nyahururu court in March this year for failing to take her 12-year-old daughter who was suffering from meningitis to hospital for treatment saying her faith only allowed her to pray for the child until God healed her.
The magistrate noted that the offence was serious as Mrs Langat placed her daughter’s life in danger. Relatives intervened and took the girl to hospital by force.
Inspector Frederick Makapila who led the prosecution told the court that the child’s uncle stormed Ms Cherono’s home and took the girl to hospital where she was diagnosed with Meningitis and admitted for five days on February 14.
The accused then visited her brother-in-law’s house where she found her daughter recuperating and took away the drugs saying it was against her faith for her to ‘defile’ her body that had remained pure since birth.
“The accused threw away the drugs saying her children had remained pure since birth and that she had given birth to her children at home without the use of modern medical care. She maintains that it is evil to take a child to hospital to seek treatment,” Mr Makapila added.
In her defense, Ms Cherono maintained her innocence saying her faith only allowed her to pray for all illnesses to go away and that no one should ever seek treatment at any medical centre.
She said that she believed that God would heal her sick daughter as He had done in the past 12 year since she was born.
