US Ambassador Scott Gration threw his security detail off balance in Kisumu on Thursday. The security personnel had their eyes off the ball after spending the entire period preventing journalists from accessing the envoy. We are told that the security detail lost track of the envoy between New Nyanza Hospital and Imperial Hotel where dignitaries were having lunch. We are told that Gration opted for a kiosk opposite the hotel where he ate his lunch alone without the knowledge of his entourage and the security detail. His absence from the Imperial Hotel caused panic among his security detail who searched the hotel with little success. However, the ambassador resurfaced with a toothpick in his hand from the "other hotel".

A Star reader is wondering what role the television news anchor Louis Otieno and one John Maina are playing in Prime Minister Raila Odinga's office. He says it is important to know whether this duplication of responsibilities falls on the shoulders of the taxpayers.

Remember Mtumishi Njeru Kathangu, the former MP for Runyenjes? He says Embu elders are prodding him to run for president. Kathangu claims elders and leaders in Embu recently summoned him. On Thursday, he posted on his Facebook page: "I was accompanied by seven friends to face 135 elders. Three questions were put to me. Why is it that you've been so silent on national and regional politics? Which political seat are you preparing for in 2012? We would like to have one of our own declare interest in the presidency; would you take this challenge?"  He has now called on his friends to help him explore the viability of his running for president.
