Palaver - 12.05.11

Things in the ‘G7 alliance’ are suddenly not looking very rosy for VP Kalonzo Musyoka, the self-proclaimed master of "Nitapita kati kati yao" — and other yet to be appreciated arts of political survival and re-engineering (prophets are rarely given accolades at home). Despite ‘UK’ and ‘WR’, the linchpins of the strange alliance repeatedly hinting at their reluctance to welcome with open arms certain individuals known to blow hot and cold, the VP held his ground; until his ODM-K candidate for the Kamkunji by-election suddenly emerged clothed in PNU colours last month. It seems another Houdini act by the Veep to keep his presidential ambition burning is just about overdue. Fifa’s house is burning and good, old Sepp Blatter, facing a fight for re-election, appears ready to cut ties with those who propped up his stinking house after new allegations of sleaze surfaced on Tuesday. It’s rotten to the core, claimed former England FA chairman Lord Triesman, who accused eight executive members of Fifa’s Board of seeking bribes to support England’s failed bid to host the 2018 World Cup which Qatar won. Among them is Ivory Coast’s Issa Hayatou who is increasingly being tainted by such allegations. Blatter responded: "If this is true, I will fight this. I am fighting for Fifa to clean Fifa... I cannot say if they are all angels or if they are all devils."
A local daily lost it while attacking the ongoing public vetting of candidates short listed for the posts of CJ and Deputy CJ this week, asking why a lawyer was allowed to interview a sitting judge. Utter rubbish of course; the hearings are unveiling skeletons in some closets. Some of the candidates squirmed as their academic histories, questionable rulings and emotions fell under public scrutiny. Palaver joins those who feel this is money well spent.
And finally...
Two naive TV reporters went on camera waving around unexploded ordnance from the field where four boys died just a day earlier, only to realise later how close they were to a similar fate! Shaken, but safe, they turned their foolish act into a story with the caption Narrow Escape. Now, is that ingenuity or impunity? Take your pick!
