Share/Save/Bookmark Internal Security minister George Saitoti has refuted claims that his ministry has failed to utilize Sh11 billion it was allocated in the 20010/2011 budget.
The ministry was among at least six ministries that failed to spend a total of Sh142 billion in budgetary allocations, according the latest government spending report.
Saitoti said the claims are a misconception stemming from delays in capturing data from all provinces and districts. He said the media used outdated data to come up with the figure. Treasury, he explained, has not updated the data in its Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) to capture all funds issued in provinces and districts. “This means that all the expenditure returns from all the ministry’s field stations which, as you all know, are spread throughout the country take a bit of time before they are fully captured by Treasury,” said Saitoti.
The Kajiado North MP noted that money for salaries for the months of May and June amounting to over Sh5.5 billion is also yet to be captured by the IFMIS. “A section of the media rushed to report such misconceptions without getting the facts on the ground. This should not be the case. I hope the media will now correct the wrong impression created,” said Saitoti.
He said there are still a number of purchases which are at advanced stages and will absorb a substantial amount of the balance. “I wish to assure all Kenyans that my ministry will do all that is possible to utilize the resources voted for the benefit of all our people,” he said.
