NAIROBI, Kenya, May 27 - An appeal has been sent to the government to fund the burial of eleven people who perished in the Kariobangi fire tragedy on Tuesday night.

Funeral Organising Committee chairman Edward Rabuogi said on Friday that the families of the deceased are unable to finance the burial.

He said that they were also planning a fund-raiser to offset bills incurred by three victims of the inferno who are still admitted at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

"The committee would like to appeal for help from the government, Members of Parliament, the City Council of Nairobi, Kenya Red Cross, the leadership of the Kasarani constituency disaster management, well wishers, friends and relatives," he stated.

The fire incident occurred at Picasso Chemicals, a paint factory in Nairobi's Kariobangi estate.

The factory owner and his wife sustained serious injuries and are admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The fire is said to have started when one of the drums with a highly flammable chemical exploded engulfing the tiny factory, police said. Investigators were trying to establish what ignited the fire.
