Share/Save/Bookmark Ministers, MPs and councillors allied to PNU yesterday held a meeting to plan the homecoming party for the Ocampo Six set for Uhuru Park on Monday.
The Boulevard Hotel meeting was attended by ministers Naomi Shaban, Chirau Ali Mwakwere, assistant minister Lewis Nguyai and former South Migirango MP Omingo Magara.
Originally the prayer meeting was just for Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto but the organisers yesterday said it will be for all the six Ocampo suspects.“We are planning a homecoming party for all the Ocampo Six. It will be a prayer gathering and we expect all the six to attend. When seeking intervention from God, you don’t discriminate and we expect all of them to show up,” said Nguyai, chairman of the organising committee.
Also in the committee are MPs William Kabogo, Joshua Kuttuny, Mwangi Kiunjuri, former MPs Maina Kamanda and Dick Wathika. All the PNU civic leaders are taking part in the arrangements. The team has organised for a truck that will carry Uhuru and Ruto from the JKIA to Uhuru Park. At Uhuru Park, religious leaders will offer prayers before the politicians speak and they are expected to unveil a new political alliance.
Nguyai said they have a letter from the police indicating they will use the venue on Monday.“We ask all our political enemies to keep peace and empathise with our colleagues instead of celebrating,” said Omingo Magara.
The Nairobi PNU councillors have been meeting to plan to mobilise their supporters to receive the suspects on return from the Hague on Monday. The civic leaders have been meeting in the past week to strategise how to show their might in the city by pulling a mammoth crowd.
On Thursday evening, they met at the Boulevard Hotel where they resolved to mobilise as many youth as possible to show solidarity with the suspects. They want a huge turnout as a show of might in Nairobi politics.
Under the leadership of nominated councillor Mutunga Mutungi, the civic leaders have resolved to print posters, T-shirts and fliers with Uhuru's and Ruto's portraits.“Karibu Nyumbani Ounye and Bill, Vijana wote wa Nai wako nyuma yenu,” one of the banners reads.
Yesterday Mutungi told the Star they plan to accord the two a heroes' welcome.“We will mobilise youths from all corners of Nairobi to line up from JKIA, Mombasa Road all through to Uhuru Park, it will be a reception like no other before,” he said.
The councillors say the event will be an opportunity to prove that they still have a grip of the city although ODM dominates the seats at City hall. The PNU has 45 councillors against ODM’s 54.“You will be seeing thousands of youths in the streets on Monday like never seen before, we want to strongly show where the city politics are headed,” Mutunga added.
