House Speaker Kenneth Marende was on Thursday praised for his ruling on the contentious nomination of four constitutional office holders.
Some MPs said the ruling was an anti-climax as the Speaker did not declare the nominations illegal to hand the ODM side victory, and neither did he say they were properly made, which would have vindicated the position taken by the PNU and the President’s supporters.
In a break with House tradition, Mr Marende allowed MPs to comment on his ruling and they promptly did so:
Justice minister Mutula Kilonzo said: “Mr Marende is “qualified to be the Chief Justice”.
The Rev Mutava Musyimi: “The Speaker reminded the Principals that they had to steer the country to prosperity.”
Need to be wiser
Tourism minister Najib Balala: “Our two principals need to be wiser.”
Mr Gitobu Imanyara: “The two principals must know that the spirit of power-sharing is not to be determined by sheer numbers in the committee stage.”
Assistant minister Mwangi Kiunjuri: “The ruling was akin to the one made by King Solomon. The Principals must decide whether they want the child dead or alive.”
Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka: “We sincerely thank you for asserting the supremacy of this House.”
Ms Rachel Shebesh and assistant minister Wavinya Ndeti lauded Mr Marende for standing firm despite being threatened ahead of the ruling.
All 160 seats were taken and some MPs sat in the corridor behind the benches.
