Politician Joseph Gitari will be the next Member of Parliament for Kirinyaga Central.
The Party of National Unity candidate emerged the winner in the constituency's by-election after polling 18, 520 against his nearest challenger Daniel Karaba (Narc Kenya) who got 16,681
The closely contested poll will be seen as a political victory for Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta as he battles Narc K leader Martha Karua for the control of the larger central Kenya vote.
A defiant Martha Karua promised to soldier on despite Wednesday's loss.
"We have lost the battle not the war. Congrats to our team no retreat no surrender. Narc kenya marches on!" Ms Karua wrote on her Twitter profile.
Below are excerpts of proceedings leading to Mr Gitari's poll victory.

18: 53 After 11 stations are tallied Mr Gitari has (2,864) while Mr Karaba has managed (2,844).
18: 46 In ten out of 50 stations, Mr Gitari assumes the lead with 2,644 votes against Mr Karaba's 2,561. The margin is just over 100 votes.
18:45 The race is neck and neck. With eight polling stations reporting Mr Karaba has amassed 2, 101 against Mr Gitari's 2,018
18: 40 Mr Karaba (1,664) and Mr Gitari (1,164) out of five polling stations.
18: 38 All indications are that the right to represent Kirinyaga Central will be a two horse race between Narc-K and PNU as heir candidates pull ahead of the rest.
18: 35 The Narc Kenya candidate in the Kirinyaga Central constituency Daniel Karaba is leading the race to be the next area MP.
With four polling stations reporting, Mr Karaba had garnered 1,183 against 690 for his nearest challenger PNU's Joseph Gitari 1,082. The DP contestant had managed Henry Mwaniki 48 votes.
