ODM-KENYA has asked its partner PNU to support its candidate for the Kamkuji by-election field a candidate in the upcoming Kamkunji by elections and to instead support the ODM-K candidate.
A National Executive Committee and parliamentary group meeting resolved yesterday that the party will field a candidate for the by-election.
Kamkunji seat fell vacant after a successful election petition against PNU’s Simon Mbugua. His election was challenged successfully by ODM rival Ibrahim Ahmed.
Yesterday's meeting was chaired jointly by the party leader Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and party vice-chair David Musila. They called on other PNU affiliates to support ODM-K's candidate. “We have been collaborating with others (parties) in Makadara, Bomachoge, Matuga, Embakasi and Kirinyiga Central. Now we want them to reciprocate the same by supporting an ODM-K candidate for Kamkunji seat,” Musila said during a briefing to journalists.
He said, however, that if PNU and its affiliates did not co-operate they would go it alone. He said the party had picked Yussuf Hassan, a former journalist, to contest the seat. “We are confident we will win. There is no reason why PNU should refuse to support us. Our victory is their victory but if they don’t support us we will beat them,” said Mutula Kilonzo, the party’s general secretary.
PNU officials could not be reached for comment as they were said to be engaged in a parliamentary session at the time of going to press.
Yesterday’s meeting brought together party leader Musyoka and general secretary Mutula who have been at a crossroads of late. “Although the resolutions were intended to unite the party the issue of strained relationship between the SG and the party leader did not arise as there are no such differences as portrayed in the newspapers,” Musila said.
Apart from embarking on opening party branch offices in all 47 counties in June, the officials said they will convene a National Delegates Conference to seek consensus for possible renaming of the party from ODM-K of PNU Alliance in readiness for next year’s general elections.
The party distanced itself from other PNU affiliate parties' proposal to have the Speaker of the National Assembly Keneth Marende censured over his ruling that dismissed President Kibaki’s nomination of four judicial officers and its threat to pull out of the coalition government. “As far as ODM-K is concerned none of the issues have been discussed or featured at any organ of PNU affiliate parties and the issues have not been brought to us. We are not party to that,” Mutula said.
He added that the Speaker had acted in line with his constitutional mandate and he will not support any debate that contravenes or reneges on the spirit of the national accord.
