Kenya wants South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mardit and his Northern counterpart Omar al Bashir to work closely to consolidate gains made towards peace in the region.
Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka asked the two leaders to agree on resource sharing and border issues in the post-referendum period.
Mr Musyoka is leading a government delegation to South Sudan to formally endorse the referendum results and welcome the new state to be launched in July 9 into the community of nations.
The delegation arrived in Juba bearing the good news of an additional $5 million (Sh400 million) donation for capacity building to enable the new state set up structures for ministries and departments.
The package, which is in addition to another $5.8 million (Sh460 million) already disbursed to the new state, entails the seconding of 80 top-notch public servants to South Sudan for three years.
Mr Musyoka lauded the people of South Sudan for conducting a peaceful referendum.
“The coalition government in Kenya is happy with the way you (South Sudanese) conducted the referendum. It is a testimony that Africans can peacefully and successfully manage delicate transitions,” Mr Musyoka noted.
He added that President al Bashir must be commended for supporting the referendum and finally endorsing the new state.
President Salva Kiir said: “We would not be where we are today, without the support of Kenya”.
