Vote peacefully, accept the verdict and move on, Moi urges Kenyans

By Peter Mutai

Former President Moi has urged Kenyans to maintain peace during and after the referendum.

Moi appealed to supporters of the ‘No’ and ‘Yes’ camps to accept the results and move on to ensure development is achieved.

"I want to call on peace loving Kenyans to maintain peace after the referendum irrespective of which side between the ‘Greens’ and the ‘Reds’ win the referendum. Peace is paramount to us all," said Moi.

Speaking during the burial of Africa Gospel Church Bishop Joseph Rono at his Keongo home near Kericho town, the former President reiterated his ‘No’ stand on the Proposed Constitution and urged residents of the South Rift not to be swayed.

MPs Charles Keter (Belgut), Zakayo Cheruiyot (Kuresoi) and his Chepalungu counterpart Isaac Ruto, Kanu national Vice-Chairman Gideon Moi and Secretary-General Nick Salat accompanied Moi yesterday.

He said there was no need for the Government to deploy thousands of security personnel to the Rift Valley saying there was peace.

"There is peace in Rift Valley and I wonder why the Government is deploying several contingents of security personnel to the region. We are peaceful and it is wrong to brand communities in the region as warmongers," he said.

Not impartial

Moi criticised civil servants who campaigned in support for the proposed law saying it will be difficult for them to serve the public since they had taken sides.

Mr Gideon echoed Moi sentiments on peace, saying the referendum vote would not threaten it.

He eulogised the deceased as an intelligent leader, who steered the church to greater heights.

"During his tenure as the bishop, the Church witnessed enormous expansion and he managed to bring together its faithful as one," the former Baringo Central MP added.

Mr Salat said during Rono’s leadership since he took over in 1999, there were no wrangles in the church. He urged whoever replaces Rono to emulate him.

The Reverend Rono, who was elected Bishop of AGC in 1999, was also the chairman of the Council, Kenya Highlands Evangelical University, chairman Board Tenwek Mission Hospital, council member Kabarak University among others.
