Kibaki set to address Kenyans

President Kibaki is expected to address the country Tuesday afternoon as Kenyans prepare to vote for or against the proposed constitution at a referendum.

A brief statement from his office said the President will make a live television and radio address to the nation at 4 p.m.

The secretariats of the Yes and No groups, which campaigned for and against the proposed law, will hold a joint press conference where they are expected to urge their supporters to maintain peace during and after the Wednesday referendum.

There have been reports of tension and anxiety in different parts of Kenya, especially those considered hotspots following intimidation and the distribution of leaflets threatening eviction.

A recent survey, conducted by Peace and Development Network Trust (PeaceNet Kenya) on behalf of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, identified 29 hotspots in different parts of the country.

They include: Mathare and Kibera in Nairobi, Nakuru, Eldoret, Naivasha, Molo, Kuresoi, Kericho, Rongai, Bomet, Bureti, Sotik, Trans Nzoia, Burnt Forest, Londiani and Uasin Gishu in the Rift Valley.

Conflict is likely to revolve around land, opposing views on the proposed Constitution and militias in those areas.

Police have already deployed in these areas.
