Following numerous complaints from members of the public concerning the Nairobi Water and Sewerage company, the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission has launched an examination into the sytems, procedures and practices of the company.

The findings and recommendations from the exercise, which is expected to take 45 days, are to be forwarded to the company to enable it develop an action plan.

Speaking at the launch, Water And Irrigation Permanent Secretary David Stower named infrastructure and corruption among the challenges facing the water sector. Mr Stower further says the company has been affected by the lack of a board of directors to advise the management.

Water, they say, is life, but this valuable commodity is still scarce in most parts of the country. Against a demand of 650 million litres of water per day, the Nairobi Water and Sewerage company produces upto 400 millio litters. Over and above this, the company has been plagued with claims of corruption from members of the public.

The acting Managing Director of the Nairobi City Water And Sewerage Board revealed that the company is working on a corruption control mechanism.

Nairobi town clerk Phillip Kisia took time to sound a warning to those who take advantage of the high demand to sell water from water bowsers.

Mr Kisia urged the water company to embrace the project, saying it is aimed at enhancing service delivery.
