IIEC Published Final Results

The interim independent electoral commission has set the stage for this Friday's grand celebration to inaugurate the new constitution after it gazetted the final results of the 4th august referendum. They had allowed a 14-day window period for anybody wishing to challenge the referendum results to do so and that period expired on Friday. The IIEC published the results in a Kenya gazette notice that confirms the yes side won the referendum after over 6 million voters, 67% of those registered, voted in favour of the proposed new constitution. The courts will however rule today on an application by two citizens who want the promulgation stopped. The two citizens, Mary Ariviza and Okotch Mondo, moved to court last Friday to challenge the referendum results saying there was need to audit the electoral tallying system. Should the court rule that the case proceeds to a full hearing, and then the promulgation may have to be called off, at least for the moment. Abdi Osman reports.
