Germany pledges support for the new constitution

Berlin - German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle pledged on Friday Berlin's support for Kenya in the implementation of its new constitution, overwhelmingly approved by Kenyan voters.

"The result of the referendum shows the will of Kenyans to jointly address the challenges that the country is facing," Westerwelle said in a statement.

The new constitution, which reduces the power of the president, is part of a reform process aimed at preventing a repeat of the violence that followed disputed presidential elections in December 2007.

"The result also shows the desire of the Kenyan nation to build bridges over the rifts of the past," Westerwelle added about the vote taken on Wednesday and the results announced Thursday. "This deserves our recognition and further support."

He said Germany had contributed directly and as part of the European Union to bring about the new constitution, which is to replace the document created after Kenya gained independence from Britain in 1963.
