The Central Organization Of Trade Union (COTU) has expressed their disappointment at the move made by the Ministry of Information and Communication to retrench 400 employees of the Postal Corporation of Kenya.

The announcement to retrench the 400 employees was made last week by the Minister For Communication And Information Samuel Poghisio who termed it as a necessary step to restructure and improve efficiency within the company.

COTU Assistant Secretary General Benson Okware termed the move by the Ministry of Information as disappointing, arguing that a tentative package should have been negotiated between the management and its workers. Mr Okware termed the move made by postal corporation of kenya to retrench its workers as unnecessary, and called on the government to improve on parastatals by establishing strong management teams and providing subsidies for the Postal Corporation Of Kenya.

Mr Okware is confident that labour issues will be addressed by the new Constitution after its promulgation. The Ministry Of Information and Communications decision to retrench workers of the Postal Corporation Of Kenya was arrived at last year after consultations within the ministry.
