WEAPONS

A major security operation is underway in Narok after police discover yet another cache of weapons.

Police are guarding two houses believed to be harbouring military cache similar to the ones recovered in the town two months ago.

The arms, whose quantity has not been ascertained, were discovered on Sunday evening in two buildings linked to local businessman Munir Ishmael.

Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere and the Director of Criminal Investigations Gatiba Karanja flew by helicopter to Narok to oversee the search.

Last December, another cache of weapons was recovered at the town in Mr Ishmael's residence. He has since been charged in court for possessing illegal firearms and is out on bond.

Attempts by journalists and shocked members of the public to see the arms were rebuffed by heavily armed police. Journalists camped at the premises hoping to take picture.

Police bosses quickly moved and obtained a court order allowing them to search the premises.

The focus of their interest are six containers found at two sites linked to Mr Ishmael.

Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe confirmed the discovery of the cache but said a search was still ongoing.

The Rift Valley Provincial Police Officer Mr Francis Munyambu is leading a team of Special Crime Prevention Unit detectives backed by their uniformed counterparts to conduct the operation.
