A bishop and his wife were yesterday arrested outside a bank with a stolen vehicle in Limuru town, Kiambu. Bishop Julis Towet of Redeemed Pentecostal Church, Kericho, his wife Nancy and their driver Johnson Cheruiyot were arrested by Administration Police officers manning Family Bank.
A businessman, Amin Nyuyali, claimed the vehicle. Residents milled at the scene to witness the arrest. Limuru police boss Moses Owiti said Nyuyali said the car was his and that it had been stolen at his Lang’ata home on March 16.
He had filed a report at the Lang’ata police station. Owiti said Nguyali noted the vehicle at Naivasha on his way from Nakuru and trailed it to Kiambu.
“He noticed the vehicle and decided to follow it. It pulled over at the bank and the occupants alighted to go inside,” Owiti said. Nguyali checked on the vehicle and identified it despite the plate numbers having been changed. He then alerted the APs outside the bank.
AP chief inspector John Opiyo and a contingent of armed APs arrived and made the arrest. The three were taken to Tigoni police station for questioning. The bishop says he exchanged the vehicle with a friend, and didn’t know it was stolen.
Towet said his car is being used by a man identified only as Rotich. Owiti said when Nyuyali’s car was stolen, its number plate read KAR 618F, but it was changed to KAX 492B. The three were transferred to Lang’ata police station, where the case was initially reported.
