KDF thwarts Shabaab attack in Afmadhow

Kenya Defence Force troops operating under the AMISOM on Tuesday evening thwarted an attempt by Al Shabaab militia to raid a defensive position in Afmadhow town.
They had previously killed 24 insurgents and siezed a huge cache of weapons in the same town.
The joint operation by KDF and the members of the Somali National Army raided what was described as an 'Al- Shabaab elite group' .
The Al shabaab fighers were said to be planning to attack AMISOM defensive position in Afmadhow city within Southern Somalia.
"The Al- Qaeda linked militia group was preparing to attack the AMISOM defensive position when they were thwarted by the allied forces," a statement from the AMISOM said.
The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Mahamat Saleh Annadif congratulated the forces on their alertness which he said had saved lives.
Among those killed were three Al Shabaab fighters identified as foreign fighters while other militiamen escaped with multiple injuries during the incident.
"The joint forces recovered weapons and ammunition among them being a rocket propelled grenade launcher, two light machine guns, nine AK 47 rifles and other assorted equipment.Regrettably, two SNA soldiers died and four others sustained minor injuries and are receiving medical attention at AMISOM facility," the statement said.
Annadif reiterated AMISOM's support to the Somali National Security Forces which he said are working closely to improve security in Southern Somalia.
