No pay for MPs as Serem team yet to meet Parliamentary Service Commission

By Geoffrey Mosoku
Nairobi, Kenya: Members of Parliament will wait longer before getting their pay as the much-anticipated meeting between Parliament and the Sarah Serem-led commission failed to take place.
Nearly a week after the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) was sworn-in, no meeting has taken place to solve the impasse as legislators enter the fourth month without pay.
Thursday, Senate Speaker Jeremiah Nyegenye, who is also the PSC secretary, said the commission was yet to deliberate on the matter.
“The commission has seized off the matter and no decision has been made,” Mr Nyegenye said on when PSC was planning to pay MPs.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission also said they had not had any discussions so far with the PSC and their position on the Sh532,000 pay still stood.
Informal meetings
Thursday, MPs who spoke to The Standard said they were still waiting for a decision to be made but they expected some good news.
Sources indicated that PSC has been having informal meetings and consulting legal experts on the way forward after the National Assembly adopted a Motion revoking a gazette notice that set salaries and perks for all State officers.
“I can’t comment about any meeting or level of discussions, just talk to our chairman,” Commissioner Regina Changorok Nyeris said when contacted.
On Monday, House Speaker Justin Muturi said the commissions will make a decision, which serves the interests of their members and meets the expectations of the society.
SRC gazetted the new salary structure for State officers on March, two days to the last elections.
Upon, swearing in, MPs rejected their new salaries slashed from Sh851,000 to Sh532,000.
