Corridors of Power

A flamboyant governor from Eastern region seems to be literally working round the clock in his efforts to put in place a 24-hour economy in his area of jurisdiction. It is not uncommon for the man to summon members of his Cabinet to attend meetings in the wee hours of the night. Some of the officials are concerned that the man's inconsiderate and unorthodox working hours are jeopardizing their marital and family life with a few of them saying they were considering quitting their jobs.

A first time MP who made an attempt to sit in a parliamentary committee while 'improperly dressed' was quickly shown the door and told to return only when he was dressed in a suit and tie or any other attire stipulated in the parliamentary code of dressing. The man had entered the meeting wearing a baggy white t-shirt with graffiti print on the back. He did not seem to realize that the committee meetings are an extension of the parliamentary proceedings and therefore all members are expected to dress appropriately. The chastened MP returned after a few minutes in a snazzy suit and tie ensemble and was allowed to participate in the meeting.

Speaker of National Assembly Justin Muturi cannot was taken aback yesterday when he learned that the MP for Mathare George Mike Wanjohi had lost his chamber access card barely a week after he and other MPs were issued with the cards. The Speaker said the MP's loss of the swipe card 'spoke volumes' about the constituency the MP represents.

Some influential figures in the government are unhappy over the case filled in the court by activist Lydia Mathia challenging the nomination of former journalist Naisula Lesuuda to the Senate. The officials, including one of the recently appointed Cabinet secretaries have now been lobbying to have Mathia appointed as the head of the youth department in the Office of the President if she dropped the case that she will first drop the case against Lesuuda.
