OFFICIAL: It is RAILA ODINGA’s candidate Marende Vs UHURU/ RUTO’s Abdikadir Mohammed

Wednesday March 20, 2013 - It is now clear that the battle for the National Assembly Speaker is a two-horse race between the former Mandera Member of Parliament Abdikadir Mohammed and the incumbent Speaker Kenneth Marende.

This is after yesterday’s Press Brief by Justice Minister Eugene Wamalwa that he is no longer seeking the Speaker’s seat thereby narrowing down the race to two.

Marende who is being fronted by Raila’s Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) will be relying heavily on his past record as the Speaker of the last parliament.

He is credited for remaining focused, sober and non-partisan in steering parliament forward during turbulent and tough times. He is also seen as a wise leader following his Solomonic judgements at the time when parliament was almost facing crisis.

On the other hand, Abdikadir Mohammed who is a member of the Mudavadi’s United Democratic Forum (UDF) is said to be relying heavily on the support of Jubilee coalition, which the UDF party is enjoying cordial working relationship with.

Abdikadir is also said to have backing from a good number of CORD MP’s who see him as young and focused. He is credited for spearheading the enactment of the new constitution when he was the Chair of the Parliamentary oversight Committee on constitution.
