A number of political heavyweights from the Coast region were fighting for survival in the senatorial and governorship contests as results started trickling in Tuesday evening.
They are likely to join a number of Cabinet ministers, assistant ministers and MPs who were voted out in county and constituency races by voters who either opted for fresh blood or chose to teach them a lesson for belonging to the “wrong” parties.
Though tallying delayed in Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu, Tana River, Taita Taveta and Kilifi counties, initial results showed seasoned politicians such as Environment minister Chirau Ali Mwakwere, his assistant Ramadhan Kajembe and former Tourism minister Najib Balala caught up in a stiff battle.
In Mombasa, Wiper’s senatorial candidate Hassan Omar took an early lead as tallying got under way across constituencies in Mombasa county.
By 6pm, Mr Omar had garnered 31,450 votes in Changamwe constituency against Mr Balala’s 11,020 and Mr Kajembe’s 856.
Mr Omar had also surged ahead in results from Likoni where he had amassed 10,057 votes against Mr Kajembe’s 4,087 and Mr Balala’s 2,143 votes.
In Kwale, Mr Mwakwere of URP was trailing former Matuga MP Boy Juma Boy of ODM by 3,284 votes in the senatorial race, according to results released in Matuga.

In Lamu, political newcomer Issa Timamy Abdallah of UDF was giving assistant minister Fahim Twaha of TNA a run for his money in the governorship race.
By 6pm, Mr Timamy was leading with 12,923 votes against Mr Twaha’s 12,879, while Mr Swaleh Salim of APK had 2,930.
Took early lead
Mr Swaleh Salim of Alliance Party of Kenya and Mr Waihiga David Mwaure of Agano Party had garnered 541 and 48 votes, respectively.
In Tana River county, TNA’s Danson Mungatana was trailing Mr Tuneya Dado of Wiper who took an early lead as vote tallying got under way.
By 6pm, Mr Dado had 8,014 votes against Mr Mungatana’s 4,372. Mr Odan Dhidha of ODM had 5,554 votes.
In the race for the women’s representative position, former nominated MP Shakila Abdallah took an early lead on Tuesday in Lamu, according to provisional results in Lamu East constituency.
The Wiper Democratic Party of Kenya candidate was leading by 3,329 votes against her closest rival, Mrs Obo Ruweida Mohammed of TNA, who had 2,810 votes.
The parliamentary race in Lamu East is pitting Ali Sheriff Athman of UDF against ODM’s Madhubuti Mohamed.
Mr Athman was leading with 1,789 votes against Mr Madhubuti’s 1,627 by 6pm Tuesday evening.
Elsewhere, Cabinet ministers Henry Kosgey (senator, Nandi), Charity Ngilu (senator, Kitui), Sally Kosgei (MP, Aldai), and Amos Kimunya (MP, Kipipiri) were shown the door.
