Judge orders mental examination of the accused

Three people suspected to be members of Mombasa Republican Council were on Tuesday charged with the murders of four policemen at the coast.

The three men and others not in court, allegedly murdered Changamwe police chief Otieno Owuor, Officer Commanding Station Salim Chebii and police constables Stephen Maithya and Andrew Songwa.

The suspects were not required to plead because investigations are still going on in the deaths of the two senior policemen and two constables in Jomvu, Mombasa county on Sunday.

High Court Judge Martin Muya directed that Mr Jubiri Ali, Mr Bwana Mkuu Alwan and Mr Anthony Mwatela be remanded at Changamwe Police Station for two weeks.

According to Coast Provincial Police Officer Aggrey Adoli, the officers were ambushed by more than 100 armed men at Changamwe on Sunday night.

The attackers had earlier assaulted residents of Mshomoroni in Kisauni district, slashed two civilians and then fled.

Area police boss Julius Wanjohi said the injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment and then transferred to the Coast Provincial General Hospital.

State counsel Alloys Kemo told the High Court that police were following crucial leads that could lead to the arrest of others.

He said some exhibits were seized and needed to be taken to the Government Chemist in Nairobi for analysis.

The judge ordered that the three suspects examined by a psychiatrist to determine if they were fit to start.

Medical reports

He also directed the deputy registrar to appoint a lawyer to represent them.

The suspects’ medical reports are expected to be produced in court on March 19, when the case will be mentioned.
