Why Eugene Wamalwa Could Still Be Uhuru's Running Mate

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto's highly publicised deal is apparently drawing mixed reactions amongst the experts and both the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities.

The experts fine tuning the deal are said to be considering a situation where both the President (Uhuru) and Deputy President (Mudavadi) are both at the Hague for the hearing of their cases at the International Criminal Court.

It is also said that there are a number of concerns that selling the ticket where Uhuru is contesting for the presidency and Ruto as his running mate will give their opponents something to use to fight them in that the candidates are both accused of grave crimes.

Another challenge is the selling of the ticket in Rift Valley, the perceived stronghold of William Ruto. Analysts argue that that kind of a ticket will give Raila Odinga a smooth leeway to woo the Rift Valley to his fold and trim Ruto's clout.

In case of a reversal where Ruto becomes the presidential candidate and Uhuru his running mate, the experts believe that it will be difficult to sell in Central Kenya.

Other sources say that Uhuru's team is not ready to deputise Ruto. They argue that Uhuru has spent so much to build his party and to finance Ruto's team to be what they are at this point. It therefore appears that that scenario is highly unlikely.

"It is better to have Eugene Wamalwa as the deputy president and have Ruto as the Majority leader to avoid having both the president and his deputy at the Hague," one of the experts said.

Others have argued that since Ruto is a senior member of the team, he should decide whether to go for the deputy position or go for the majority leader position.
