Redskins Rule and the 2012 Presidential Election

Rafael Suanes-US PRESSWIRE
We break down the "Redskins Rule" which details Presidential Election results when the Redskins win and lose before the election.

Week 9 of the 2012 NFL season is a big one for teams looking to boost their playoff credentials. It is even more important this season because of the potential implications in the 2012 Presidential Election. There is "rule" in place that says when the Washington Redskins win their game immediately prior to the United States presidential election, the incumbent party wins.
The rule has not had a perfect history. In 2004, when George Bush defeated John Kerry, the Washington Redskins lost to the Packers in the week leading up to the election. Other than that, dating back to Franklin Roosevelt's win over Wendell Wilkie in 1940, the rule has applied.
The Redskins host the Carolina Panthers in a Week 9 matchup in which Washington is a 3½-point favorite. The Redskins have lost two straight and need to get back on track if they want to hang around the playoff race. The presidential candidates may have other things on their minds right now, but I would not be surprised if one or both is aware of the Redskins rule heading into Tuesday's election.
