Kenyatta National Hospital has confirmed receiving nine policemen injured in a Saturday evening attack by cattle rustlers in Samburu.
The hospital also confirmed all the nine are in stable condition.
The hospital’s acting communications manager Kibet Mengich said it had received the security officers most of whom had gunshot wounds.
The nine officers were part of the 21 survivors of the attack on Saturday in which their seven colleagues were killed. (READ: At least 7 police killed, 21 wounded in ambush)
Kenyatta National Hospital said four of the nine received were Administration Police officers, one GSU and two from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit. There were also tow police reservists.
“All of them are male. Two are admitted with gun-shot wounds on various parts of the body (and)7 are admitted with soft tissue injuries, fractures, lower limb and abdomen injuries,” said Mr Mengich without clarifying when they were admitted.
The officers were manning an area fraught with banditry and poor road and communication network.
A police officer who sought anonymity told an AFP reporter that the officers were ambushed as they chased after suspected cattle rustlers, although the same policeman added that some of the bandits were killed in the shoot-out.
A report released last year by the Small Arms Survey showed that there could be as many as 450,000 illegal guns in the country, many of which are in the hands of pastoralists. (READ: Anxiety as more Kenyans in urban centres and villages acquire illegal guns)
But the government has reported before that pastoral communities have over the years spent over Sh1.1 billion to purchase these arms through porous borders.
