Matatu-bus crash kills three pupils

A journey back home for 33 kindergarten and primary school children ended tragically after three of them died in a road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
The accident involved a mini-bus belonging to Acacia Academy in Kitengela and a matatu, which was bound for Machakos town.
The bus normally collects the children in the morning and takes them to school.
The accident occurred at Sabaki at around 4.30pm. Eyewitnesses said the mini-bus was trying to make a turn when it was hit by the matatu.
It overturned
It overturned throwing its passengers outside the vehicle. Several passengers from the matatu were also hurt.
Athi River police boss Kirinya and Traffic Base Commander Charles Opondo had a difficult time trying to maintain order at the scene of the accident as crestfallen parents and Good Samaritans scrambled to offer help to the children.
The injured were taken to Shalom Athi River Community Hospital. At least 20 were admitted.

Dr Hellen Omari confirmed that three children died while three others were referred to Kenyatta National Hospital.
“Many of the injured suffered broken limbs, chest injuries and head injuries,” the doctor said.
Travellers and motorists blamed lack of properly designed feeder roads for the accident.
They said similar crashes had occurred at the spot.
