Top Education officials in Homa Bay County face the sack over the deadly dormitory inferno that killed eight pupils at Asumbi Girls Primary School.
Education minister Mutula Kilonzo said Friday stern action will be taken after it became apparent the officials had misled the government over holiday tuition.
"The County Director of Education for Homa Bay County and the District Education Officer have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect,” Mr Kilonzo said during a news conference in Nairobi.
However, the minister has no powers to fire the officials since they are employees of the Public Service Commission.
Those who face the sack include Beatrice Asiago who is the county education boss and William Akumu, the district education officer.
Mr Kilonzo also dissolved the school's Board of Governors and announced a new board would be constituted soon.
The minister said he had written to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) asking for administrative action against the Asumbi Primary School head teacher.
He announced the government will prosecute officials found culpable by investigations into the fire incident.
Mr Kilonzo ordered schools to remove burglar-proof doors in dormitories and academic areas in all boarding schools around the country.
