Do you work for a BANK in Kenya? Fresh Vetting…..

Wednesday, August 01, 2012 - Employees of Kenya’s banking sector will be vetted afresh in an initiative to curb the recent bank robberies and fraud incidents which have hit the banking sector.

This came after the month of July was hit by several bank robberies which are thought to have been perpetrated by bank employees. Chase bank and Paramount Bank have been the most recently hit banks with robbers escaping with millions of shillings in both local and foreign currencies.

The money has since then not been recovered. In a report that was released last year over 27 million shillings were stolen from banks both in robberies and fraud. The report named “Financial Fraud in Kenyan Banking Sector” stated that only Sh. 7 million of the Sh. 27 million was recovered between January last year and November.

In the report, money on transit was the most targeted by robbers while complex bank frauds are now a new trend in the banking sector.

The powerful Kenya Bankers Association in coalition with some insurance companies are supporting the move to vet bank employees afresh, an operation that will be conducted by the National Security and Intelligence Services.
