An aspirant for the Kangema by-election has accused the family of late Environment Minister John Michuki of interfering in the exercise.
Mrs Ann Wangari Kirima said by endorsing a candidate of their choice, the family was attempting to subvert the process and influence the constituents.
On Sunday, the late MP’s family declared it would back Mr Tirus Ngahu for the seat.
The late Michuki’s widow, Josephine Watiri, however said the constituents were free to make their choice.
She explained that Mr Ngahu, a businessman magnate, would follow in her husband’s steps.
In a letter addressed to the constituents and read on her behalf by one of her sons Mr Fred Chege, Mrs Michuki said she had made the choice after ‘serious’ soul searching and prayers.
“However, the people of Kangema are free to make their own choice and elect whoever they think is suitable,” she added at Gitura ACK church.
But the move has not gone well with Mrs Kirima, daughter of business tycoon the late Gerishon Kirima, who expressed fear that the endorsement might interfere with the nomination.
“I am disappointed by the move by the family to endorse someone, the choice who will lead Kangema must be left to the people of Kangema,” she said Monday during a press conference at a Murang’a hotel.

The National Alliance (TNA) candidate said the move could also affect the nomination exercise and asked the party to ensure fairness.
“I demand that TNA ensures the nomination is free and fair and no one should influence the people of Kangema in making a choice,” she said.
The nomination will be held on Wednesday.
