Another one from Education MINI-ster, MUTULA.

Another one from Education MINI-ster, MUTULA.

Friday, August 03, 2012 - Education Minister Mutula Kilonzo is once again making headlines after issuing a directive to all schools in Kenya to allow students to elect prefects and student leaders instead of being picked by the school administration.

The Mbooni Member of Parliament caused a stir recently when he supported a girls’ school in Central Kenya who had gone on strike demanding to be allowed to don modern and attractive miniskirts in school.

Kilonzo went on to introduce his model skirt that is just two inches below the knee in a bid to quell the storm  over  the miniskirt row.

The former Justice Minister called upon institutions to come up with comfortable and modern attires for students and not nun-like dressing mode.

The Minister proceeded to caution school heads against making changes, including skirt sizes that affect learners without involving them through their representatives.

Quoting article 53 (2), he asserted that “A child’s best interest are of paramount importance in every matter concerning the child.”

Mutula’s recent directive is meant to tame the rising tide of school strikes country wide where students accuse the administration of high handedness and lack of a platform to voice their grievances as the picked leaders always side with the administration for fear of victimization.
