Key leaders who have quit the Orange Democratic Movement will soon launch a coalition on whose ticket they will contest the next General Election.
Mvita MP Najib Balala, who made the revelation on Friday, asked Prime Minister Raila Odinga to prepare for a tough battle for the presidency from his former allies in ODM.
Mvita MP Najib Balala, who made the revelation on Friday, asked Prime Minister Raila Odinga to prepare for a tough battle for the presidency from his former allies in ODM.
Mr Balala said the political vehicle was ready and like-minded politicians from different regions would come together to name the coalition in the next 10 days.
“We are asking the PM to prepare for the battle and he should know it will not be easy. In the next few months we shall be playing a different ball game,” said the former Tourism minister.
The announcement comes in the wake of a rush by some presidential hopefuls and key leaders to hold meetings in search of unity ahead of the next polls set for March 4, 2013.
Sources said Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi, who announced that he is quitting ODM last weekend, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto have been holding meetings in an effort to pool votes to win the elections.
Mr Kenyatta, Mr Ruto, Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka and Justice minister Eugene Wamalwa are members of the G7 Alliance.
Mr Odinga’s former allies include Mr Ruto, Mr Mudavadi, Mr Balala, Dujis MP Aden Duale and a host of MPs from the Rift Valley.
Powerful politicians
Mr Balala said a group of powerful politicians are finalising a few things before the launch. He spoke during a function to hand over Sh2 million to the Kenya Medical Training College in Mombasa for various projects.
“We have consulted enough and we are going to use tribal alliances positively to ensure like-minded people are brought together to move this country to another level,” said Mr Balala.
The Mvita MP asked those who have not yet made up their minds to do so before the launch in Mombasa.
“We have advised our friend, Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi, that he is welcome and that time is now to make a decision before it’s too late,” said Mr Balala.
Mr Mudavadi and Mr Kenyatta are finalising plans to name their new parties after they quit ODM and Kanu respectively.
Mr Mudavadi plans to hold a rally and several meetings in the Coast Province early next month.
