A district commissioner’s 19-year-old son and his friend were on Thursday killed by a mob in Buuri District, Meru County, after they shot at a vehicle in a hijack bid.
The two friends were stoned to death at Mutunyi trading centre where they attempted to hijack a seven-seater matatu heading to Isiolo.
They tried to stop the vehicle at gunpoint but the driver defied the orders, leading to the shooting.
Buuri police boss John Ngare said one of the passengers was injured during the 9am incident.
The man was admitted to Isiolo District Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
Edwin Chedotum, the son of Merti DC Chedotum Kamunyan, and his friend, the son of a military officer, stole a Cesca pistol belonging to the administrator’s security men and went on a drinking spree in Meru the night before.
On their way back to Isiolo, they alighted at Mutunyi and started waving down matatus plying the Isiolo-Meru route.
They shot at one of the matatus three times after the driver refused to stop.
This forced traders at the centre to scamper for safety but returned when the youth surrendered to the military personnel who had shot in the air.
“The bodies have been taken to the Isiolo District Hospital mortuary but we are investigating how they stole the gun,” said Mr Ngare.
According to a witness who preferred to remain anonymous, Edwin, who had the pistol, threw it away and tried to escape with his friend.
He said the mob, however, pursued them and ended up stoning them to death.
The two friends had earlier terrorised revellers in Meru town the night before, according to witnesses.
Mr Ngare said the police were looking for them after receiving reports of two armed youths on the loose. He said police recovered the pistol and two bullets from the two.
The DC, who came to Isiolo from Merti after receiving news of his son’s death, said Edwin had never shown any indiscipline before.
Upper Eastern deputy PC Isaiah Nakoru urged residents to be on the lookout for any criminal elements among them and alert police.
