  • Mercenaries have been hired to execute assassination plot, Gem MP claims
ODM  Chief Whip Jakoyo Midiwo on Saturday sensationally alleged a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Mr Midiwo alleged mercenaries had been hired to execute the plot adding that senior government officials he did not name were in the loop.
He asked the minister for Foreign Affairs, Prof Sam Ongeri, to investigate the alleged involvement of foreign individuals in the plot.
However, he did not disclose the nationalities of people who were to be involved in the plan.
Mr Midiwo said he was yet to record a statement with the police but added that he would do so “soon”.
He spoke in the presence of the PM and Cabinet ministers Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o (Medical Services),  Dalmas Otieno (Public Service) and James Orengo (Lands) during the burial of Dr Leah Gondi in Bondo District.
The three ministers said that the matter should be taken seriously.
As PM, Mr Odinga enjoys round the clock high level security provided by the elite Recce Company of the General Service Unit.
But the Prime Minister refused to be drawn into the debate saying that they were at a funeral and that the politicians were scaring mourners for no reason.
“Cowards fear and they die many times but I will die once when the right time comes,” he said.
Contacted afterwards, Mr Odinga’s spokesman Dennis Onyango said that the PM heard about the alleged plot for the first time at the funeral.
“My reading was that the whole thing caught him off guard. He did say he will proceed with his life and work, after all you can only die once and if he dies, Kenyans will mourn him. He quoted the Shakespeare line on cowards die many times before their real death, the brave die only once. He never really dwelt on it. But Orengo and Nyong’o asked him to take it seriously,” Mr Onyango said.
Mr Midiwo said he was sounding the alarm early so that they could avert the plot.
“I am willing to testify under oath because if I don’t say it now, nobody will,” said the Gem MP.
Mr Midiwo said “I have made my statement in public, if the police are interested, let them come to me. But I believe some of them are also involved in the plot”.
Mr Midiwo alleged that a meeting was held last Sunday which brought together two ministers, a senior security officer and a permanent secretary during which elimination of the Prime Minister was discussed as the last option in swinging the Kibaki’s succession race.
He however said that the President was not in the picture about the plot.
