President Kibaki’s order to police to strictly enforce traffic rules this Easter season must be obeyed without fail.
Going by the queues on bus termini yesterday, indications are that many Kenyans plan to travel to celebrate the Easter holidays with their families and friends. Others have scheduled vacations at various parts of the country.
As has been a common trend in seasons like this, greedy motorists take advantage of the passengers’ rush to not only inflate fares, but also to drive at life-threatening high speeds.
Already, there have been far too many accidents lately for anyone’s liking. This must not be allowed to continue during this long weekend.
The traffic police must, therefore, heed President Kibaki’s words and ensure lives are safeguarded.
They must shun their notorious habit of accepting bribes to allow speeding and unroadworthy vehicles to ply any route.
On their part, passengers should not agree to travel in vehicles whose drivers disobey traffic rules.
Equally important is the need for police to ensure the security of Kenyans during this period.

We know only too well that our security systems keep failing us.
In the recent past, grenades have been tossed into the crowds in busy social places and bus termini, a clear testimony of serious security lapses.
In sum, the government must not just stop at its promise that it has gathered sufficient intelligence reports that would help ward off insecurity.
It must actually stop the attacks and guarantee Kenyans security this Easter, and afterwards.
Meanwhile, we wish our readers best wishes this Easter season.
